I found this link on the LPD web site in the chief's blog. I just thought it was interesting and some people might feel safer knowing what the police say.
This is a very interesting post Casady made. What scares me the most though is that where I used to live (23rd and Holdrege) is rated as the place in Lincoln where people feel least safe. I will admit there were some shady looking people around that neighborhood, and I guess I always stayed away from walking the streets at night. But as a woman and knowing the statistics about women who are assaulted or raped, I think that is enough to keep you inside at night. I know that when I lived on 7th and Charleston my dad would always worry about me walking over the tenth street bridge after my night classes (he actually went as far as buying me a rape whistle, like it’s going to help). My point is though, why is it that women feel so unsafe going out at night time? I know that most victims of violence are assaulted by people they know, so why are we so afraid to be attacked by strangers rather than looking around at the people we already know?
Because this map only shows how people feel about their neighborhoods rather than the facts, it’s hard to decipher where the most crime happens in the city. I know I’d like to see that map instead. There is a link on the City of Lincoln’s homepage where you can check how much and what kind of crime (i.e. assaults, car theft, drug busts, murder) happens in your neighborhood. It’s definitely worth checking out.
Here’s the link: http://ims.lincoln.ne.gov/CrimeViewCommunity/default.asp
I didn’t even know that this blog existed. It’s pretty cool though to think about the fact that even the City of Lincoln utilizes this type of technology.
