A Diet Pill with Some Nasty Punishments!

Alli is the first over-the-counter weight loss drug to get an approval from the Food and Drug Administration, but it can cause some ghastly side effects if users cheat on their diets. This diet pill was approved by the FDA in 2007 despite the scary side effect: if you stray too far from your diet, you just might poop your pants! "The drug’s maker, GlaxoSmithKline, has been up front about the pill’s side effects, suggesting that first timers wear dark pants or bring a change of clothes to work until they get used to the diet pill’s potentially yucky consequences." Sounds crazy huh? Well this is actually a real side effect for going on this diet plan.
  • "The diet pill works by blocking 25 percent of fat from being digested. Alli users take one pill with every meal, and to avoid an “Alli oops,” they should eat less than 42 grams of fat a day, or about 15 grams per meal. But those fat grams can be sneaky. One grande Starbucks Caramel Frappuccino contains 15 grams of fat, and if an Alli user adds even a low-fat muffin to that meal, it could get icky."
I think this is crazy how far some people will go to lose weight. I feel like if you want to lose weight that bad then you should be able to stick to a diet plan without taking a diet pill that punishes you in such a fowl manner. As one user gives details of their experience on the diet pill, "I’ve pooped my pants 3 times today, and sorry to get descriptive but it even leaked onto the couch at one point!" Other users even talk about wearing diapers to try to prevent leakage onto their clothing!!

  1. What are your thoughts on this first ever FDA approved diet pill?
  2. Do you think it is worth the embarrassing side effects?

This is so disgusting. I am shocked that someone would actually consider this drug to be safe. I can only imagine it is bad for your digestive organs and for your skin when you have "accidents" so often. I think that people who resort to something so extreme are lazy and need to get off of their butt and do some exercize. A family member of mine has type two diabetes. He recognizes that the weight gain is his own fault combined with some physical issues that he faces. He is currently on a strict diet and exercize regimen, but in order to lose weight he needs to over come his physical problems. He is having surgery to currect his problems, but in order to be a healthy candidate for surgery he needs to loose weight. It is a vicious circle be he can't lose weight until his limbs are fully functioning. His doctor has reccommended using a diet pill until his surgery date. I understand that this was the doctor's recommendation, but it is a huge concern for our family. What happens if the diet pill triggers other health issues? What happens if he becomes to the instant gratifcation of this diet pill?
I think that in my family's case it is ok to resort to diet pills. I am not sure that I want my own family to be doing so, but it is justifiable if it is a last resort. We Americans face so much pressure to look perfect that we go to extreme measures just to get rid of that extra fat. It is interesting because most people attribute this issue and eating disorders to women, but in reality eating disorders are on the rise and a huge issue for men as welll. I would actually assume that they are worse for men. Women struggle to talk about eating disorders, but in 2008 the prevalence is known and women are't ostricized for having this disease. HOwever, men aren't able to discuss this problem since they have the gendered stereotype of being big and strong and being able to eat all day and drink beer and still look good. I fear for the people that have these struggles and resort to pills like Alli because I truly believe it will harm them in the end.

It is gross. But some people choose to have their stomach stapled shut, live with nasty side effects from recovering from that type of surgery, and then proceed to have more plastic surgery to fix the excess skin that was left by such a quick and dramatic weight loss. The only difference I see is that they are suffering mild consequences; I think the people that go through surgery are making an even larger sacrifice. I have heard that the product ‘expelled’ is not even poo, it is actually some nasty, thick oily substance that comes from fat. (I have also heard that you smell pretty nasty too). But if that is what they want to endure to loose weight and they are willing to go through those nasty side effects, it isn’t going to affect me in any way shape or form.

If you think that is unsafe you need to read the side effects of other diet pills that are not FDA approved. One presentation in my class was on diet pills and their useage by college females. One of the presenters had tried a diet pill and experienced convulsions and was sent to the hospital. Our society has become so bombarded with pictures in the media of individuals with unhealthy, low BMIs that people will ignore the dangerous side effects to obtain a quick-fix to a problem that may not exist.

I think that this is disgusting. Why would you want to poop your pants to loose only a few pounds? I think that this is one drug that the results do not outweigh the side effects of its use. Why not just go out and get some real exercise? It would cost you less and be better for you to go running for half an hour each day than to take a drug and continue to eat like you normally would.

I think that this side effect is also on the disgusting side, but to me here is the real kicker. Do you know how much weight this pill helps you lose, "with regular exercise and a diet program" that means you don't expect the pill to magically help you lose weight, you lose only a small percentage of weight more than you would have without it. The average extra weight lost with prescription strength Xenical in one year is 6 pounds (that means the diets and exercise) and Alli is not prescription strength, it's over the counter. So say half that amount of extra weight, three pounds and for that I get to poop in my pants, no thank you. Actually the ads that first came out said that if you normally lost ten pounds, then by using Alli you would lost 15, WOW. Not really worth it.

I definitely don't think its worth it. I love that the article suggests simply takinga pair of dark pants to work in case you poop yourself. Ew! My favorite part is the nickname... the Alli Oops!

How many times have I said it on this blog?! But, I think this all leads back to the media's influence. News stations, magazines, and television programs are constantly tellign Americans how overweight we are as a country and how to "effectively" lose weight. Pair this with stick thin models and airbrushed celebs and you have a recipe for disaster.

So, you have women willing to get liposuction at thousands of dollars or take a diet pill that causes them to deficate on themselves. This is what we are communicating to oursleves through these shows and magazines ads, you MUST be thin in ANY way possible

Huh. I don’t know what would be more embarrassing… being overweight or having to wear an adult diaper because you poop your pants 3 times a day! That is absurd! If you really want to lose weight cut out Starbucks and God knows whatever else. It’s amazing to me the lengths people will go to to lose weight without having to change anything about their lifestyle! This diet pill makes me ashamed of the human race. How pathetic.

I was just talking with my sister in law about this diet pill a few weeks ago. She informed me about what the pill was and the ways it will limit you to intake fat. I am wondering what ever happened to will power to not eat junk food. I can't even imagine wanting to use any diet pill let alone one that has this type of side effects. It would be so embarrassing to have to bring extra clothes to work, where would you put your clothes that you just "leaked" in? Our society and media is completely centered on how to be skinny and not as worried on how to be healthy.

WOW...I had no idea! I always see that Alli in stores and wonder what its all about. Not that I was going to buy it, but I have been curious as to what it is all about. Now I will be sure to discourage people from using it. It must just be full of laxatives! As for the person that had pooped 3 times in that one day...I think it might be time to stop taking it! One accident would be enough for me to stop taking Alli!!

I don't know if any one has covered this yet, but here are my thoughts. As a person who has spent a great deal of my life trying to emulate the perfect body; you know the kind of body that you see in the hypersexual magazines we looked at in class. I spent hours hours, tried all the supplements out there, with the ultimate goal of reaching that great "frame" and for what? More attention, more muscles, more appealing to the opposite sex. All these things were meaningless to what I had lost out on in the process. Closeness with family, anger and aggression towards friends, ultra-competitive and a hyper-active lifestyle. Be careful what you ask for is all i'm saying. That same idyllic view portrayed in magazines or day time television gives all of us a distorted image of what's attainable, and how looking that way can make you feel great. It sounds like in this story we're dealing with a little bit of that. With the exponential rise in women eating disorders over the last several years, (men's are increasing at a similar rate)a decision like this diet pill should be an informed, necessary, and carefully monitored by a doctor. NOt to mention, the horrendous side effects that ensue. It reminds me of my running days, when I used to see the front-runners, not want to stop and they would literally deficate themselves while they kept going. Replusive i know.
