violent cheerleaders
I know this video is not new to some people, and was posted a few weeks ago, but I cannot seem to get over it! It hurts my heart to see how harsh these young girls are. While watching it, the 1st time & the 10th time, I couldn't help but wonder... What did this poor girl do to these girls to cause them to beat on her. Girls in high school are mean and jealousy can make them do awful things. This video makes me so sad, not only because someone is getting hurt but because it is so unsual to see girls act this way! I feel like there has been alot of attention to this video because they are women... men are violently aggressive all the time but dont get this much attention for it. It bothers me that, just because it is common for the male gender to act like this, that it is overlooked sometimes. I cant help but wonder... what made these girls think that this tape would give them any kind of positive attention? And what was it that made them think that it was okay, or that there wouldnt be any consequences. It especially kills me that two boys were outside the house waiting, knowing what was going on inside!! I was just curious to hear others' opinions... and how gender affects peoples' perception when violence like this occurs.

This video was awful!! I can't imagine how those boys could stand outside and be the lookout for the fight going on inside. The internet has allowed for hurtful posts to be placed because there is the illusion of protection by not saying these things to someone's face. I think that this sort of was the start of the whole situation - both sets of girls were gossiping about each other online and then the video was placed online. The Internet allows a message to be spread to others quicker than anything else out there and once it is there, it's there for good.
This type of violence is terrifying and shows a need for society to pay attention and do something. This story was also in the most recent people magazine if anyone wants to look at it.
I think that this is a terrible thing to do to someone else no matter the sex. I find it more appalling however that we do tend to ignore this type of violence with boys because it is the norm while highlighting it when girls do it. It does show that people need to pay attention to what their kids are doing and need to exert some real form of punishment.
I think that this is terrible and that no one should get away with this. Just because we expect this kind of behavior from boys does not make it right. Maybe because we expect this kind of behavior from some people, primarily boys, we are allowing it to happen?
DO we think this video is awful because of the violence or because it's girls? I recently saw a video on the news of young girls "tagging" (spray painting)a building and the anchors were in an uproar about the fact that the taggers were female instead of male. I think when our society views female violence we have a tendency to overjudge it or overanalyze it because we don't expect that behavior from females since we socially define them as demure and gentle. However if this video was of young men we would probably disregard it as another boy fight and highly typical of boy behavior because we have socially defined young men in that way. I hope that at some point we can recognize illegitimate behavior for what it is rather than as a gendered activity.
I can't even believe that they would video tape this! How aweful! Why is this something that these girls think is ok. It is interesting that this is getting so much attention because if it were a bunch of football players it wouldn't be out of the ordinary. I don't know what would be going on in these girls heads when they were doing this and that they could continue to beat her up!
I agree that this is a horrific incident and by no means does anyone ever deserve such treatment. I would like to take a step back from the actual act and look at how this story is being portrayed. Instead of saying "Violent Act Against Women," or some other kind of headline; the news uses a headline such as "Violent cheerleaders." Does this mean that cheerleaders aren't suppose to be violent? Were they trying to make the story more shocking by titling it in such a manner? I don't know, just a thought.
I feel the unfortunate thing is that it came to this. Consider how many times smaller and what some maybe called normal harassments may have or did take place prior to this. Do all of those things go unnoticed and unreported? I don't feel that is incident is a "why I think this is a great idea lets do it" case. I wouldn't think one could be that mean at the drop of a hat but I could be wrong. What incidents lead/escalated to this? Why is there no focus on those incidents? Why is it that it seems to always come to such a horrific act to make people notice? Regardless of the fact that girls are the perpetrators in this case why is it always a horrific incident to bring this to everyone attention and unfortunately when the next horrific thing happens the attention will move away from what caused this incident. So I ask what are we going to do to keep this a present topic of what caused this to happen to begin with. And keep people aware of what caused it and how to prevent it rather then only paying attention to it when it makes itself known in an incident like this.
Obviously they were trying to communicate something to this girl, even if it didn’t get across. But what was it they were saying to her and why this way. Yes females were the ones who did it in this case and men have done it before. But why have both males and females chosen to use this as their form of communicating. Because they have obviously chosen it for a reason and it that reason because it is what the learned from watching their parents or because other forms of communication didn’t work.
