Ads on Facebook

Has anyone noticed yet that the ads on Facebook are now gender/sex specific. Facebook caught on. I was talking to a friend about it yesterday and she loudly proclaimed “yeah I always get adds fro music I like and shoes…what’s with that. I was wondering why.” Has anyone else noticed the on their Facebook account? I have.

Not only does facebook do that, which I have totally noticed that their ads pertain primarily to what is listed in your profile information, but also Myspace does the same. In my myspace account I mention that I enjoy singing and drinking coffee and on my homepage there are always ads for music camps, Starbucks coffee, and for new "trendy" clothes.

It might be because I am female and it says so on facebook, but I have noticed very women-targeted ads on my facebook account. For example, almost every time I am on face I see the same damn ad about love handles and how to get rid of them by taking their weight loss supplement every time I get on. I am so sick of seeing ads about losing weight. That would be horrible if they only put those ads on the females facebook accounts!!

I also have noticed that. On my myspace page I mention that I have a daughter. Ever since I put that information on there, when I log out CafeMom always is the page that pops up. The facebook ads are always trying to sell me something that is one of my "interests". I would like to know what makes it alright for companies to show ads that relate to your interest, especially when you have your profile set to private.

I noticed that g-mail does this too...depending on the e-mail that i am writing or receiving they send me ads that have to do with the topic of the e-mail I was reading...to be honest it kind of creeps me out.

I have begun noticing the ads on facebook for "men wanting to meet men" and other more targeted ads. I dofind it kind of disturbing that they are beginning to use information found on peoples profiles more and more to target ads that they feel will better sell a product, rather than the random ads that would appear in the past.

I just had to do a project where we were setting up an ad to place on facebook and it is amazing how specific you can get with targeting who you want to reach. You can target not only by gender but by geographical location, interests, hobbies, keywords, exc....

Advertising is changing because in order to reach our audience you need to connect with them directly - Facebook and these other social networking sites are catching on!
