INDEPENDENT do you know what that means?

This is part of a new rap song that is popular on the radio now. They spell out the word independent as it is used to describe a woman in the song. The woman has her own house, her own car, two jobs, cooks, and cleans her own house. I think this song is refreshing considering the songs we looked at in class. Finally a song that shows how a real woman lives that isn't an object in a rap video. Anyone else have any other examples??

I agree, I think this song is very refreshing - especially coming in the form of rap. So many rap songs negatively portray women as strippers, dancers or sex maniacs. Songs like this show how society is changing how it views the roles of women and how they are "supposed" to behave.

The song it still showing the women cooking and cleaning, why. Id she owns her own, house, car and has two jobs. Get some one else to do it. Yes the song is refreshing but still implies that women must cook and clean. That part of the song irks me. It shows the good but still slides in the bad at the end and continues to embed those gender roles.

Another song that is positive for women is "Behold A Lady" by Outkast. It talks about how women should be treated with respect.

It is good to see that a male is talking up a female and calling her "bad" because she is independent. I didn't really think of it but you do bring up a good point!

I agree with this song too!! There are often songs out there that women write - like Destiny's Child - that are very empowering, but they often don't come from men!
